“Haathi on cycle” dents into Yogi’s turf

On the counting day, amidst the trends started pouring in
favor of Samajwadi Party, I read a tweet by a random politics enthusiast, “BJP
wins every state election, but loses every by-poll. People are confused! And that’s
why they want simultaneous elections…” With an astonishing win registered in the
red bastion of Tripura just a week ago, the saffron flag suffers a dent after a
humiliating defeat in the home turf of “brand” Yogi. Gorakhpur being ruled by
Goraknath Matt for 28 years, Yogi himself ruling since 1998 & prior to him
by his Guru Mahant Avaidyanath, now goes into SP’s fragment even with a fall in
vote-share of the BJP. With a pre-poll unconditional support coming in from Mayawati’s
Bahujan Samaj Party turns out to be a game changer, just a day after a dinner
hosted by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to look into possibilities of “an anti-BJP”
coalition.

Results in UP shows that the combine of SP-BSP which stalled BJP’s march to victory during 1993 in the backdrop of Babri Masjid Demolition has won the litmus test and when SP says “BSP tie-up to stay”, question arises can they still play the spoilsport in 2019? There are numerous of factors for the BJP to lose its key prestige seats once ruled by the incumbent Chief Minister & Deputy Chief Minister of the country’s largest state. One; the combo of Nishad, Dalit, Muslim & Yadav votes coming in for Praveen Kumar Nishad, whose party got amalgamated into SP days before the polls. Two; the BJP’s Brahman candidate Upendra Dutt Shukla, close to union minister Shiv Pratap Shukla, doesn’t belong to Gorakhnath Mutt. Three; low turnout of 43% on the voting day & that too on Sunday shows the resentment of the locals. According to an article published in Hindustan Times, the ill-effects of Demonetization as well as the GST affected the local traders, mostly small scale, voted against the ruling party at large.

The bitter performance of the BJP continues in the Phulpur
Lok Sabha seat that it lost even with a bigger margin of around 60,000 votes.
Once the stronghold of Congress where Pandit Nehru won thrice went only for BJP’s
Keshav Prasad Mourya first time in 2014. Mourya said, “Phulpur pehli baar
jeete they.. Gorakhpur lagataar jeet rahe they.. Jahan chook hui usey
dekhenge..” However, some cheer for the party in Bihar where it retained
the Bhabua assembly seat but in opposition to Congress. But they [BJP-JD(U)]
lost their vote share in Araria LS seat which was retained by the RJD under the
leadership of maturing Tejasvi Prasad Yadav. In all these “game of votes” the
Congress seems to be losing its national party status in the presence of regional
parties. The bigger challenge here emerges for RaGa and team dreaming of an
alliance against the BJP, but parties like TRS, TMC and BSP are in a different
mood: The Third Front. One more thing missing prior to the result was the worries
about the rigged EVMs! So hereby the 2019 elections are truly open.
